Year 2011 Highlights

Year 2011 Highlights

1. Weekly Interview Program with U Win Tin: Since his release from prison, MoeMaKa kept in touch with the major opposition figure to report his view and perspective on Burma's issues. It has covered critical political campaigns of the Burmese democratic activists, such as the boycott on the 2010 Regime's election and on the continuing struggles of Burmese oppositions under the new government elected from Regime's sham 2010 election.

2. Media coverage on Aung San Suu Kyi: Since her release from her house arrest in November 2010, we have covered and reported news of her activity, speeches, and events. We were also given a valuable interview with her to explain our existence and progress. She has shown her agreement and support of the mission of MoeMaKa Burmese news group for the struggle for democracy and freedom of expression in Burma.

3. Media coverage and Raising Awareness on current community led campaign for Burma:
Under the solidarity leadership of opposition leaders, Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, and U Win Tin, the Burmese democratic community become mobilized again and started to raise funds and charities to support the Burmese political prisoners and their families. They also called for the release of all political prisoners inside Burma by signing the petition together with the leaders. The Burmese democratic community became actively involved in reforming the state with true federation, not like the state ran by the centralized regime backed by the dictatorial military leaders. MoeMaKa is continuing covering the situation and also help raising awareness of the issues towards the Burmese community.

Year 2010 Highlights

Year 2010 Highlights

1.      Media Coverage on Boycott 2010 Regime's Election:   We have continuously reported and covered boycott movements of the Burmese community and democratic opposition led by NLD on Burmese Regime’s 2010 Election. The whole international democratic community later regarded election as a sham election. MoeMaKa has done series of interviews with NLD leader U Win Tin of his opinion and his part with NLD struggle to lead the boycott movements.

2.      Media Coverage and Raising Charity Awareness on Natural Disaster Events inside Burma:   We have followed and presented news of fundraising events and relief works by the Burmese community to help Burmese victims suffering from natural disasters in Burma in 2010, which the Burmese regime ignored and neglected. Due to the lack of news coverage, Burmese community relied on news updates from MoeMaKa.

3.      Media Coverage on expelling Regime's Artists visiting USA; We also have reported and followed public protests and campaigns of Burmese Americans against the entertainment tours led by Burmese actress, Wyine Sue Khaing Thein who supports Burmese regime’s propagandas portraying Burmese democracy movements as terrorist and anarchy’s plots. Later the US Government revoked all the visas of Burmese tour group resulting in immediate return to Burma. It was encouraging news for Burmese democracy community.

4.      Media Coverage on Community Sponsored Social Service Award for Volunteers inside Burma;  We have continuously followed and informed the readers on the movements of  “Citizen of Burma Award”. Collective Burmese American communities from 15 cities organized this award movement. It was to honor the Burmese volunteer community leader inside Burma for his/her contribution and sacrifice. MoeMaKa has provided insightful news and update of the open voting process on their web site, which attracted Burmese from all over the world to vote for their most loved community volunteer or volunteer association. It was one of the major interests of Burmese community and it had highlighted awareness on charity spirit among Burmese community.

Burmese Community and MoeMaKa in 2007

Burmese Community and MoeMaKa in 2007

by Maung YIT • October 11, 2007 •

MoeMaKa’s regular programs and articles on contemporary issues of Burma written by some artists and writers who are still inside Burma with hidden pen names ( It is considered most significant because MoeMaKa became trusted and credible by the Burmese audience and also by the artists and writers who are under the heavy censorship of military junta)

MoeMaKa’s Special Program – Letters from the Readers – which is sorely contributed by the Burmese audience inside Burma and overseas, expressing of their opinions and thoughts.

2007 June – MoeMaKa on the Blog (http://moemaka.blogspot.com ) – to overcome and by pass the internet censorship and filtering by the Burmese junta, MoeMaKa has setup its blog site with the same content from MoeMaKa as a backup and the easy assess for the audience inside Burma. It played significant part in posting and publishing news and photos of 2007 August and September protests and crackdown in most convenient and fastest way possible to reach the outside world.

2007 July – Remembering Poet Tin Moe – 6 Month Anniversary Literary Talk
– with his fellow writers and artists, U Thaung, U Win Pe, Maung Swan Yi and Mar Mar Aye at the bay area in California with 400 Burmese audience to raise awareness on Burmese literature and Burmese issue on freedom of press and expression in Burma.

2007 August – Presenting MoeMaKa’s Video Archives on YouTube.com – starting with the uploading of video archive of the event of 19th year anniversary of Burma 8-8-88 People Uprising celebrated by 1988 student-activist group in Rangoon, Burma and followed by photo, video archive and presentation of news and event on Burma, it is considered milestone for us because through YouTube, more and more audience are drawn to MoeMaKa and we are in more visible position to raise the awareness on the struggle of freedom of press and human rights in Burma.

2007 August, September – Saffron Revolution related photos and news updates – with the volunteer team members of MoeMaKa inside Burma, we have significantly contributed and distributed day to day, hour to hour updates of the incidents and protests of Burmese activists, public, monks and the crackdown of the Burmese junta through the blog of MoeMaKa and they were instantly picked up and broadcasted on international main stream media such as like on CNN.

The best obvious photo example is – photos shot at the early morning raid by the Burmese army at Burmese monastery called Ngwe Kyar Yan in Rangoon, Burma.

We let every news agency to use them for free and the impact and the concern from the international readers on Burma was found to be very much important as it caused the tremendous pressure and reaction by the UN, US and EU to Burmese junta to stop the crackdown and stand down the human rights abuse on Burmese people.

2007 October – Technical Support to Sasanamoli, International Buddhist Monks Organization(http://www.sasanamoli.org) – which was formed after the crackdown on the monks by the Burmese junta inside Burma in the Saffron revolution to help and protect the monks and the freedom of religion in Burma. In October 2006, MoeMaKa team had managed to host 3rd Year Anniversary Mate Son Pwe (Gathering/Reunion) and Workshop with all interested advisors, team members, writers and audience from inside and outside Burma. We have established better understanding and interrelationship with the team members, contributors and audience.

2.   Plan Ahead Year 2007 – Building up capacity and beyond

We are also planning to prepare and present "MoeMaKa in English" as MoeMaKa is to gain more audience not only with Burmese speakers but also with non-Burmese speakers to raise more awareness on building democratic civil society in Burma.

We have estimated self-funding and general fund of US$ 50,000.00 to run our basic day to day operation of MoeMaKa.

We have plan to setup new server and site design running with UTF-8 compliance web code which will house both English and Burmese character content in single web application. It will enable the Burmese audience inside Burma to browse our website seamlessly without any band width or technical delay.

As we have provided more detailed explanation in separate "Audio/ Visual Archive Project", our advisors, U Win Pe and Maung Swan Yi will be leading the project to collect more in-depth interview with senior Burmese intellectuals and artists abroad.

3.  Major setback and boundary MoeMaKa facing

1.      Up until now, MoeMaKa could not still be able to compensate the volunteer staffs for their valuable time and service. We still could not even employ a part time staff yet. Still, we have encouraged and requested them to continue their volunteer service and fund contribution to make our operation running so that the grant money could be able to spend on the more production of our works and on the royalty fees to the more needy Burmese writers and artists.

2.      In the long run, we have to prove that we can raise more funds from donor organizations to expand our operation, services and facility. We have to come up with more organized documentation and management order.

4.  MoeMaKa Still Looking Forward

We are deeply appreciated and obliged for the grant received. We would like to commit ourselves on making of MoeMaKa as a practical ground for building democratic civil society for the near future of Burma. We also would like to welcome more volunteers and support to make this institution a success as an example of Burmese communities inside and outside Burma to be more willing and daring to contribute towards democratic struggle of Burma independently.

Best Regards
