Background information on Myanmar's current situation 

During 2021,2022, after the Myanmar military took over power with a bloody coup from a legally elected government led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, National League for Democracy, the country is spinning into more bloody crackdown and armed conflicts. Since then Myanmar writers, artists, and reporters who are against the military’s coup have fled from home, going into hiding, and even left for border areas, especially in the Thai & Indian borders.  MoeMaKa Multimedia continues and also steps up its operation and support to Myanmar community concerns. 

Programs Performed Past and Presents 

 

1.     Humanitarian Support -  Provide financial & material assistance to democracy activists, human rights defenders, human rights lawyers, and civil society organizers in Myanmar (Burma) and neighboring countries such as Thailand, and India for their efforts in strengthening democratic civil society in Burma, also known as Myanmar.

2.     Community Awareness - Aware Myanmar (Burma) Culture & Community in the USA - Support, Promote & Organize Myanmar Burmese Community Events and Activities to raise awareness on Myanmar (Burma), Myanmar Burmese language & culture in Northern California and across the USA.

3.     Media Programming - Creativity, Reporting & Publishing Myanmar (Burma) - Support & organize Myanmar Burmese writers & reporters' works and report on Myanmar Burma & Myanmar Burmese Literature. To publish & present online multimedia website, social media and also on Short-Wave Radio Broadcast over Myanmar airwaves.

Media Program Objectives

 

1.     To support & organize Myanmar Burmese writers & reporters' works and report on Myanmar Burma & Myanmar Burmese Literature who are in exile or still inside the country or internally displaced for standing up for freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

2.     To publish & present online multimedia website, social media, and on Short-Wave Radio Broadcasts and Satellite Video Transmission over Myanmar airwaves.

 

Program Activities

 

1.     Engage and network with individuals or groups of reporters, writers, and activists to empower their productivity and creativity on the issue of Myanmar on freedom of expression and press.

2.     Produce and compile their works into presentable multimedia materials with the contribution of new generation talents from Myanmar inside or abroad.

3.     Publish and present the works on multiple social, media, and broadcast platforms accessible to audiences interested in Myanmar’s civil society and democratic struggle.

4.     Through these efforts, establish and manage safe spaces, safe passages, safe places, and arrange workshops and discussions to follow up their works’ outcome, training, and consultation to improve and progress of independent writers and media individuals and groups.

Charity and Award Raised by MoeMaKa with Burmese Community (2012)

1. Burmese Helping Burmese Fund – This is to support and help Burmese artists and activists inside Burma who are socially and politically at the disadvantage due to the suppression and repression of the Burmese junta. For the year 2010, we have raised and donated total of US $31176.88.

2. Support Network for political prisoners run by NLD – This is to morally and financially support Burmese political prisoners and families in need. The support network is setup and operated by NLD's social support group. Friends of MoeMaKa is raising fund to support 50 political prisoners with the monthly contribution of about US$ 600.00.

3. Friends of MoeMaKa Annual Award – This is to recognize and appreciate democracy and human rights activists and individuals for their outstanding contribution and sacrifice for the country. We have raised US $1000.00 towards 600 political prisoners listed in the NLD support network for the year 2011 Award. We have raised and awarded US $500.00 each to the following individuals for the year 2010. U Win Pe, Maung Swan Yi, Mar Mar Aye and Maung Thara were awarded for their literary and art works while they are in exile.

SFBC Bookdrive was created by the Burmese community in San Francisco Bay Area to donate books to Burmese libraries and communities in need of them. The reason being that in Burma, children books and literature are needed in bulk and on a cheap scale, to encourage children's growth in knowledge and creativity, as well as learning English. In other countries, children books and literature are available to all. We need the same to in Burma. That is why we are lending our hands to do so.

  -to support and volunteer in educational and charity related works in needed community and neighbourhoods starting with our own Burmese community

"MoeMaKa Media 2011 Award" Goes to 600 Burmese Political Prisoners

We would like to declare that ‘Friend of Moemaka Media Award’ for this year will be presented to 600 political prisoners who are being supported by the NLD’s social assistance body. We have decided to honor and raise, from our reserve funds, an initial aid of US $600 at the rate of one dollar for each of those prisoners currently listed and helped by the NLD.

If MoeMaKa’s friends and donors being pleased with such action wish to contribute as much as they can, we will add their donations to our initial fund and the total collection will go to political prisoners of NLD via its current assistance body.

The donations received within 7 days, starting from the date of this announcement made, will be given to the 600 political prisoners inside Burma through NLD’s social assistance committee. For example, if the appeal fund reaches US$ 1200 by adding donations from all of you, Moemaka will be able to support US$ 2 for each activist. We want to say that we are determined to assume responsibility for raising funds. We would also like to inform all of you that we will, to the best of our ability, keep supporting political prisoners in coming months as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Tin, and U Tin Oo have requested.

In Burma, there are many brave families, innocent students, and heroes who sacrifice their lives and future for the foundation and process of Burmese pro-democracy revolution. These martyrs sacrificed for what they believe in. By standing by those people, we express our support for both them and Democratic cause. We believe that it is a step towards the goal of pro-democracy movements. MoeMaKa is currently making a monthly donation of over US $700 /800. This program is a separate undertaking of Moemaka. We deeply believe that we will be able to carry out this duty with the support of the public and friends of Moemaka.

For the coming months, we are thinking of providing a list of political prisoners and their respective serial numbers to those who want to select and effectively help one prisoner of their own choice by drawing lots like the activity held in NLD’s headquarter, Yangon.

MoeMaKa would like to urge the Burmese from aboard to donate, within their limit, monthly to the different serial numbers of political prisoners so that these donations will, as a common aid, cover the assistance costs for 600 political prisoners. If you do donate only 5 dollar for one person or a number and undertake to help as possible numbers as you can, Moemaka team expect that Moemaka’s friends and us will be able to continue our monthly scheme to support 600 political prisoners of NLD.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has urged all of us to join hands in carrying out Burmese democracy movements, and to set up networks as far as we can reach. She also added that it is time to help and support ‘Prisoners of Conscience’ closely by taking responsibility by drawing lots. We, at present, think that we can help 600 political prisoners and their families of NLD’s network by raising funds and collecting contributions from aboard to a certain extent that we can think of.

With this letter we, the Moemaka team, would like to inspire members of social assistance groups of the Bay area, the NLD (L.A), friends in the USA, and organizations carrying out Burmese affairs to team up together with us.

The list of donors and the exact amount of funds received will be declared clearly.

Moemaka team also hope to be able to organize fund raising events for assistance of 600 political prisoners, a plan initiated by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy.

1. Supporting MoeMaKa Reporting Team in Rangoon

Compose of 4 Teams covering different area and issues inside Burma for communication, traveling, rental space and equipment expenses.


2. Supporting MoeMaKa Communication Team in Thailand

Compose of 1 team as to work in operation communication center between Rangoon and US Team and also to co work for web casting and online publication of MoeMaKa web services. for communication, traveling, rental space and equipment expenses.

3. Publication of Books

Publishing of books written by Burmese exile writers, artists and also written by Burmese writers inside Burma banned or censored inside Burma which shall be also provided in e-PDF files to distribute inside Burma through email, CD ROM and USB devices.

We have following Burmese writers and artists in exile as our MoeMaKa advisory and contributors group such as Maung Swan Yi, a poet and critic, Director Win Pe, film director and artist, Mar Mar Aye, singer and artist and Aung Way, poet.

We are expecting to publish at least 3 books to 6 books per year.


4. Production of Multimedia Products

MoeMaKa has committed itself in archiving, recording and collecting oral and visual history from the view and the voice of Burmese contemporary artists, writers and dissidents. It is regularly at least weekly web casting from our website – http://moemaka.net - MoeMaKa audio & video gallery website.

With the advice and recommendation from our advisory team and also from the team from Rangoon and senior Burmese contributors, we will be doing documentary of such archives

We are expecting to produce at least 12 documentary pieces per year.

5. Royalties, Honorariums and Advisory Fees to Contributors

As we have published daily 3 to 5 articles per day, we have an average of 100 article published monthly online not mentioning relating photos, video and audio archives. While the production and operation costs are kept at minimum, we would like to show our thanks and appreciation to our contributors, artist and writers with some compensation. We will be providing either financial or material present to the writers and contributors.


6. Supporting Creativity, Capacity and Activity of Burmese Journalists, Writers and Artists of new generation

While we are supporting and running the existing operation of MoeMaKa, it is also crucial for us to keep an eye on the new generation of Burmese writers, journalists and artists. MoeMaKa will be finding such persons to support their creativity, capacity and activity to encourage them and also offer them an opportunity to work with MoeMaKa as a training ground. They can be either working with team in Rangoon or Thailand.


7. Translation of MoeMaKa in Burmese into English Project

MoeMaKa is been offering Burmese related news and articles in Burmese language to Burmese audience. As we need to tell the story of Burmese people’s struggle for democracy and freedom to the whole World in English language, we have started our first phase of presenting MoeMaKa in English.

We will be offering translation works and task to Burmese inside and outside Burma who want not only to improve English fluency but also have the interest to make this happen so that the world would be able to see through the reflection of Burmese people itself.
